During the Civil War, the town of Varnell in Crow Valley was called Varnell’s Station. It was the site of a clash on May 9, 1864, where Confederate Major General Joseph Wheeler, with 900 cavalrymen, routed 5000 Federals under Brigadier General Edward M. McCook. Ten Confederates and 150 Federals were killed, and Wheeler captured more than 100 prisoners.
