Throughout much of 1862 and until being forced to move south during the spring of 1864, hospitals in the Dalton area cared for thousands of Confederate casualties from battles in Tennessee and northwest Georgia. Many who died in the hospitals are buried in the Dalton Confederate Cemetery. Internments include 421 unknown Confederates, four known Confederates, and four unknown Federal soldiers. A monument to the Confederate dead from the battles of Dalton, Rocky Face, Chickamauga, and Resaca was erected in 1892. The United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Dalton Civil War Round Table hold a memorial service here on Confederate Memorial Day.
