This steep, challenging hiking rail ascends Rocky Face Mountain west of Dalton through the area where the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge occurred on May 8-10, 1864. The Disney Trail provides access to the north end of the mountain, which entrenched Confederates defended along the ridge.
At the trail’s end is the grave of the British nation and Confederate volunteer Georg Disney, a member of the 4th Kentucky Orphan Brigade of Major General William B. Bate’s division. The 4th Kentucky was deployed in a line from the mountain’s base to the ridge’s summit to view Federal troop movements and convey the information back down the line. Disney was killed by a random shot during the fighting on February 25, 1864, and was buried where he fell. The grave was discovered by a Dalton Boy Scout troop in 1912 and through their efforts the wooden war-era grave marker was replace by the marble marker seen today.
