The only statue in the United States honoring Virginia-born Confederate army commander General Joseph E. Johnston is in downtown Dalton. Johnston was primarily responsible for the Confederate victory at the First Battle of Manassas early in the war. However, a strained personal relationship with President Jefferson Davis and a cautious nature hampered Johnston’s effectiveness throughout the war. The United Daughters of the Confederacy dedicated this statue on October 12, 1912. Artist and sculptor Belle Kinney designed the bronze statue, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
