The Cartersville Depot is the site of General Joseph E. Johnston’s rear guard action against Federal forces on May 19-20, 1864. A large section of the original depot, approximately 40 feet wide and 124 feet long, survived the Federal attack on May 20. The restored depot is now home to the Cartersville-Bartow County Visitors Information Center.
Outside the depot stands the Cooper Friendship Monument, the only monument known to be erected by a debtor to honor his creditors. In 1860, iron mogul Mark Anthony Cooper built the monument to honor 38 friends who aided him in a financial crisis.
