The small pre-Civil War town of Allatoona, built along Allatoona Creek, was a gold mining area that reached its height in the 1840s and 1850s. In 1864, during Major General William T. Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, the town served as a major Union supply depot with a garrison of around 900 meant. A brief, but fierce, battle was fought there on October 5, 1864. The town of Allatoona was destroyed in the late 1940s when Lake Allatoona was formed. The town was never rebuilt.
