“Ft Pulaski and Civil War”
1st Place Lower Elementary School Winner GCWC Art Contest – S. R. Chatterjee, 2nd grader at Johns Creek Elementary
Description: Ft Pulaski was built during the 1830-40 near the Savannah River. It was built to protect the city of Savannah. During the Civil War, Ft Pulaski was attacked by the Union Army. It was finally surrendered. Nobody thought that such a fine and mighty fort would be defeated. My drawing is mainly about people at the fort shooting cannons and trying to keep the city safe. They are fighting against the Union Army.

Description: The monument I chose was state of a Confederate soldier at Westview Cemetery on “Confederate Knoll” in Atlanta, GA. I chose it because I thought it would look good in my picture and looked fun to draw. I also drew it thinking, “Because they died, we are free.” The mediums I used were colored pencils and watercolors.

“The Past is Set in Stone”
1st Place Middle School Winner GCWC Art Contest – A. Adewala 8th grader at Mason Creek Middle School
Description: The picture itself is of the memorial of James B. McPherson in McPherson Square. McPherson himself had fought on the Union side of the Civil War and had died shortly after the Battle of Atlanta. The piece itself means more than this though, it shows the past and the casualties of the Civil War are unchangeable, and, as the rest of the quote states, “the future is unwritten”.
“Keeping Watch”
2nd Place Place Middle School Winner GCWC Art Contest – O. Adkins, 8th grader at Dade Middle School
Description: A pencil-drawn battle scene, my piece is simply a reflection on the impact that the Civil War left on Georgia, which still lingers in so many ways. It represents the honor for the South, which so many of those soldiers had in their hearts, and how deeply they cared for their home, enough to keep watch over it for centuries to come.
“John B Gordon”
3rd Place Middle School Winner GCWC Art Contest – P. Pearson, 8th grader at Dade Middle School
Description: A Civil War general for the South, whose monument is in Atlanta, Georgia. I chose this monument because of his pose and the majestic horse his in astride.
“Unknown”
1st Place High School Winner GCWC Art Contest – D. Manning, 12th grader at Murray County High School
Description: This is a charcoal of three unknown Confederate States of America soldiers’ graves, being overlooked by three crosses and the US flag. May we remember their sacrifices.
“The Lion of Atlanta”
2nd Place High School Winner GCWC Art Contest – K. Dickinson, 11th grader at McIntosh High School
Description: This artwork depicts the “Lion of Atlanta”, which is housed in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. This sculpture is made of marble and serves as a memorial to the “Unknown Confederate Dead” buried in the cemetery. I decided to sketch on black paper, using various shades of greys, whites, blacks, and yellow colored pencils. To add my own twist, instead of portraying the lion in full daylight, I wanted to create the impression that evening light was filtering through the leaves, utilizing only a splash of color.
“Florida Monument”
3rd Place High School Winner GCWC Art Contest – W. Brown, 11th grader at Lakeview Ft Oglethorpe High School
Description: The soldier standing on the Florida Monument is no one in particular; but, instead is a soldier commemorating the fallen troops of the Battle of Chickamauga, fought on September 19-20, 1863. Whether they fell in battle, or stood to tell the tale, everyone is given the commemoration by this monument.
